Biography

I am a writer who practices law in New York City. I write literary/upmarket and crime fiction. My debut novel, Hollow Spaces, is scheduled to be published by Counterpoint Press on August 5, 2025. I am also the author of the Audible Original Little Surrenders.

I was raised in Jersey City, New Jersey, and attended St. Peter’s Preparatory School, where I was, among other things, the editor of the literary magazine and a varsity swimmer. I attended New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, where I studied at the Atlantic Theater Company Acting School. While at NYU, I wrote, produced, and directed an off-off-Broadway play, as well as performed stand-up comedy.

After obtaining my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drama, I founded a theater company, wrote and performed a one-man show (An Almost One Man Show), and acted in a variety of plays. Starving, and figuring that I did not owe quite enough in student debt, I applied to law school.

I attended New York Law School, where I eventually served as an Articles Editor on the Law Review. Among other awards there, I won the Otto L. Walter Distinguished Writing Award for my student note, Judicial Notice: How Judicial Bias Impacts the Unequal Application of Equal Protection Principles in Affirmative Action Cases, 49 N.Y.L. Sch. L. Rev. 1173 (2005). I later published an article, Rebalancing the Scales: Restoring the Availability of Disparate Impact Causes of Action in Title VI Cases, 54 N.Y.L. Sch. L. Rev. 27 (2009/2010).

After law school, I clerked for a notable federal appeals court judge and worked at a Wall Street law firm. I served for ten years on the staff of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in the Division of Enforcement, including as a Senior Trial Counsel and as the Enforcement Counsel for Chair Gary Gensler. I left the SEC in January 2025 and am now a partner at Kostelanetz LLP.

I live with my wife and two children in New York City, where I grow plants on my windowsill. I study kung fu, focusing on bagua zhang and baji chaun among other styles.
